Calibre 03 · Four-level logic game

FORiX

Twenty pieces, four levels. The two in the middle are played in your head.

Ref. LGX-FORIX88.2 × 88.2 × 42.2 mmAges 8+

How it works

One rule:everything has to fit, on four levels.

Each challenge sets pieces for you, from the bottom to the top. Every other piece has to find its place, and there is only one solution. Scroll: challenge 01 builds itself before your eyes, twenty pieces in all.

The box · 100 empty cells

  1. IThe box4 levels of 5 × 515 mm pitch, 9 mm levels: one hundred cells, for twenty five-cube pieces.
  2. IIThe given piecesSixteen, bottom to topChallenge 01 sets sixteen. They go in first, from the bottom up, in the guide's order; the first eight line the floor.
  3. IIIBridges on bridgesB bridges over R, which bridges over N and QEvery piece spans two levels. A piece placed on a bridge becomes the bridge for the next: L rests on A, then P and C rest on L.
  4. IVThe invisible levelsTwo levels, hidden in the middleI and J cover B: soon, levels 2 and 3 are out of sight. You have to hold them in your head.
  5. VThe pieces to findO, C, E, DThe last four, all at the top. C rests on four pieces at once: I, L, O and R.
  6. VIThe lid is the judgeClosed or notThe pieces rise to 35.8 mm, the lid stops at 36.2 mm: it only shuts flat when all one hundred cells are filled.

Anatomy · exploded view by level

Twenty pieces, one hundred cubes, not one to spare.

The ten DUiX pieces, the expansion's eight and two copies, E′ and F′: two pieces per color, told apart by the engraved letter. Challenge 01 arranges them in three layers, each straddling two levels. Pick a reference to examine it on its own, from every angle.

↑ Tap a reference to see it in 3D and turn it.
“4 + 1”: cubes on the piece's lower level + cubes on its upper level.

Combinatorics · depth

Billions of ways to fill the box. Each challenge leaves only one.

4 × 10⁹

Challenge 120 · Wizard · no pieces placed

Exact solver counts from four pieces placed; before that, Knuth estimate (± 50%). Since E and E′, F and F′ are identical, each solution is counted only once.

The challenges

120 challenges, from sixteen given pieces down to ten.

Five levels of 24 challenges. The higher the level, the fewer pieces you are given: at Wizard, ten are left to place. Scroll: the cursor runs through all 120 challenges, from the simplest to the most devious.

Bar height: size of the solver's search tree, in nodes, on a log scale. Every challenge has a unique solution, verified by two independently written solvers.

The guide

No booklet. The QR code on the box opens the challenge in 3D.

  • 01The given pieces go in one by one, in 3D, level by level: sixteen in the first challenge, ten in the last. Every piece carries its letter, top and bottom.
  • 02Turn and zoom the view with your finger. With four levels, the bottom pieces are soon hidden: the guide shows them to you.
  • 03No account, no app. The guide works offline once loaded.
  • 04120 challenges for FORiX, 960 across the eight games in the range.
